The Power of Prayer
Prayer is like breathing. Without breathing we cannot live. When we breathe, air enters our lungs, cleanses the blood in our veins by relieving it of the carbon dioxide, and supplying it with oxygen. If I do not breathe for a few minutes I die. When I have hard physical work to do, I need more air than when I am sleeping or sitting in a chair. Fortunately God has so ordained that we do not die spiritually just because we have failed to pray for sometime. But where there is no prayer sin accumulates and the proper functioning of the spiritual life becomes obstructed.Prayer is an invocation or act that seeks to activate a rapport with an object of worship through deliberate communication. In the narrow sense, the term refers to an act of supplication or intercession directed towards a god , or a deified ancestor.
It happened in the United States in 1980. Sixteen year old Timothy Vercimo and David Williams were attending a course in parachute flying in New York. They had completed one-month theory classes. Now, they were ready to make the first practical attempt on July 26. Both looked forward to a thrilling experience of flying down to the earth. They worked hard to make this first experience a memorable one.
At 3.30 pm they flew up to a height of 1100 metres. Their trainer also was with them. David Williams was the first one to jump down from the aeroplane. He did not have any trouble in moving down slowly through the air. Now, it was the turn of Timothy Vercimo. As he heard the word 'go' he jumped out of the aeroplane with lot of courage and enthusiasm. He was falling down to the earth very fast. Though he tried his best to open the parachute, he failed.
Timothy crashed down to the ground dangerously. All his companions thought his short life on the earth had ended. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he had to undergo a six hour-long operation. At last, the doctors declared he had miraculously overcome the critical situation. Before leaving the hospital, after 71 days, he addressed a press conference. He told the reporters, "As was falling down. I realized only God could save me. I just closed my eyes and told Him that it was a matter between us. If you wish and find my life worthwhile. O Lord, protect me.
Dr.Hamilton was the chief surgeon who treated Timothy. He says, "There are three factors that went in favour of Timothy. Since he fell on loose soil the harshness of the fall was comparatively less. He was also lucky to fall on his sides. Had he fallen either on the back or chest, it would have been more difficult for him to survive. Moreover, it seems he was protected by an invisible power which wanted him to be alive."
Once, St.Teresa of Avila wanted to build an orphanage. At that time she was facing a serious financial crisis. A Friend asked how she was going to build the orphanage at that time of the crisis. She was lost in deep thought for a few seconds. Then she replied, "I cannot do much with my power But I can do wonders with the help of God."
Prayer is generally accepted as a loving relationship between God and man. Through prayer one speaks with God Just as a child speaks to its father. Prayer has many advantages that help us to be successful in life.
There is a famous advertisement of the Hong Kong Bank, which appears in the international magazines. It shows a small family enjoying its holiday on seashore. The son is riding a bicycle. His father, mother and sister are running after it. The caption under it reads thus: 'I am free because I have one of the world's largest financial organization behind me'. This is the attitude a person of prayer will have. One who believes in the power of prayer knows he has the assistance of a great power. It frees him from all kinds of tensions and worries.
Prayer is powerful and we can achieve a lot of things with the help of prayer. But don't take it as a chance to avoid hard work.
Don't try to substitute work with prayer. Prayer will not be helpful if it is not accompanied by action. The best prayer is to ask God's help to fulfil our responsibilities. Once we have done our part leave the rest in the hands of God.
We know how plants receive energy from sunlight and soil to grow up. In the same way we can receive power from God through prayer. This power will help us to work hard and achieve the target.
